Many people are always on the lookout for good ways to save money. However, sometimes, these can cause more harm than good.

Whether saving money on heating, preventing draughts, or looking out for special offers in the supermarket, saving money has long been an issue, and there are many tricks for saving electricity. But TV owners, in particular, should pay attention to this tip. Should you leave the TV on standby or switch it off when connected to a power strip?

These devices could be damaged
As Chip reports, there are some televisions that do not tolerate this power drain well. These include “expensive OLED televisions,” because “if you simply disconnect the OLED television from the power supply after a TV session, you risk permanently damaging the device. In concrete terms, this means that the picture can burn in over time.” Why?

These OLED televisions run “refresh programs” at certain intervals to prevent this “burn-in effect.” This program is started “after around four to six hours of operation, about 15 minutes after switching off,” as Chip further reports. The online magazine tested how long such a process takes and came to the following conclusion:

Two OLED TVs from LG and Philips were tested. The care program took 12 to 15 minutes for both models. The TVs drew 36 watts to 47 watts. So you must wait a while before you can disconnect an OLED TV from the mains. If you don’t do this, you risk damaging the panel over time.
Wait a few minutes
So it’s clear: before you flip the switch and turn off the standby mode, it’s not good for the TV in the long term. Chip concludes that it is not always worth taking power away from the TV for cost reasons.

“If you still feel more comfortable with it, you should do this after about an hour at the earliest with an OLED TV,” is listed as a tip. “And at best, if operation is paused for a longer period of time, for example, because you are going on vacation, it doesn’t hurt to disconnect the TV from the mains.”
